EU slashes cost of using mobile internet

Computer Active Magazine has reported that the French minister for industry and consumer affairs, Luc Chatel, has said that they want to avoid what he called "bill shock" where the traveller returns home to find a huge and unexpected bill that’s been unwittingly run up whilst away.

From July 2009, whilst away, you’ll pay about 9p (11 euro cents) for texts which compares very favourably with the current European average of 24p.

A ceiling of 83p (1 euro) per meg downloaded is also wanted for data downloads, and an account that reaches a threshold of £41 (50 euros) will have its connection severed automatically so preventing massive bills from being run up accidentally. These rules will remain in force and be reviewed in 2013.

These steps are the latest in a campaign in Europe to reduce the cost of roaming charges, which began in 2007, with limits placed on charges for voice calls made using your mobile in other EU countries.
